16MW Box Canyon Hydro Project achieves COD
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, July 7, 2016 – Elemental Energy Inc. (“Elemental”) is pleased to announce the achievement of commercial operation on its 16 megawatt run-of-river Box Canyon Hydro Project located in Howe Sound, British Columbia. The commissioning was celebrated at a Blessing Ceremony led by the Squamish First Nation, a valued partner on the project. As part of the ceremony, four witnesses were called to speak about Box Canyon, including Joe Houssian, Chairman of Elemental Energy, Chief Dale Harry and Chief Bill Williams of the Squamish First Nation, and Paul Kariya, Executive Director of Clean Energy BC.
“The Squamish First Nation and Elemental Energy have engaged in a close partnership on Box Canyon and this project shows how First Nations and renewable energy developers can work collaboratively to develop sustainable projects together in First Nations traditional territories,” said Chief Bill Williams.
The Project has a 40-year power purchase agreement with BC Hydro. It includes 3 creek intakes and 8.6 kilometres of penstock culminating at a powerhouse at the base of the McNab Valley. “This milestone is the culmination of years of hard work by our contractors, consultants, partners and the team at Elemental Energy,” stated Ryan Hanson, Project Director. “We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who helped make this project a reality and to BC Hydro for the opportunity to provide clean, renewable energy to British Columbians.”
